This fungus does not infect leaves when free, liquid water is present. As a matter of fact, mildew infections are more prevalent on plants growing near doors or broken or leaky windows where there is a draft and evaporation is rapid.

Botrytis fungus becomes troublesome in dark humid weather. On begonias it causes stem rot: on cyclamen it affects the leaves; on geraniums, lilies, bougainvilleas and snapdragons it affects both leaves and flowers.

An old-fashioned but still fairly effective way to keep botrytis infection to a minimum is to practice sanitation. Infected flowers and leaves should he removed as soon as noticed, and burned or carted out of the greenhouse. They should never be thrown beneath the bench or into any container in the greenhouse. Reducing the humidity by control of heat and ventilation, increasing air circulation and avoiding the splashing of water all help to reduce botrytis infection. Planning the type of system you require takes a little planning, but for the most part your guidelines are simply figuring out what your plants need and what you need in terms of efficiency.

As previously mentioned, the design of an optimal greenhouse watering system requires a holistic approach. You will need to look at the type of soil inside your greenhouse, the amount of water your plants require, the drainage and ventilation, (to control moisture and humidity). Any system that is providing too much moisture, in partnership with the heat, can create an environment that is perfect for disease. This will require that you monitor your soil especially after you first install your system and adjust accordingly.

Once you have established your watering needs, then you can build your greenhouse watering system. I recommend using PVC for the main lines of greenhouse watering systems and using spray heads from your local hardware store.

When it comes to spray heads, there are a lot of options here as well. I like to use heads that lightly spray your plants and drip systems as well. If you have a multiple variety of fruits or vegetables, then you are going to want to separate the system utilizing solenoid valves like you would find on any type of sprinkler system landscape. Once installed, the low voltage lines can be a check box that program can be performed to obtain the desired results.

Not all greenhouse irrigation systems are the same. Setting the type of delivery is all done with the sprinkler heads. You can choose to program a normal type of head for your plants at intervals of shower. You can also head a sort of fog, or even a drip system. Ask your supplier of irrigationfor more alternatives.

When installing automatic greenhouse watering systems, I prefer to hang my piping from the ceiling. This allows me greater access to plants and keeps me from having to negotiate additional obstacles on the floor of the greenhouse.

While these greenhouse watering systems provide a more automated system many people find it more practical to water their plants by hand. If this is the case, I would still recommend bringing your supply into the greenhouse or just outside the greenhouse doors.

As you can see, there are a variety of techniques and styles of greenhouse watering systems that can please just about any gardener. Customizing the system you need will help you become a more efficient gardener. Sometimes using a combination of differing greenhouse watering systems can be an excellent and optimal choice. Hot Bed - A Simple Greenhouse

A hot bed is simply a cold frame which has bottom heat incorporated into it. The old fashioned way is to use manure for the heat source. The recipe for this is about one third organic matter, such as straw or dried leaves to about two thirds fresh manure. This can be horse, sheep, cow, rabbit or fowl. It is best to dig a pit to put this mixture into. Do not use cat or dog manure as these can contain parasites. Mix this thoroughly, water good and leave to sit for a few days. Turn it, to mix in more air. By now, decomposition should be occurring and it should be putting off heat. Lay the cold frame over the manure pit. Then put about an inch of soil on top of the manure mix. You now have an old fashioned hot bed, or you should.

You can plant seedlings into the soil, or in bedding packs filled with potting soil. After germination, the seedlings can be transplanted and moved into a cold frame to grow further before setting out into the garden.

A more reliable heat source for the hot bed is specially made heating cables. These can be found in garden centers and greenhouse supply houses. They generally run off standard 110 volts, have a thermostat which is preset at seventy degrees. Dig a shallow pit about three inches deep. Lay the cables in the pit in a pattern which allows even heat over the entire hot bed. You can uses landscape staples to fasten it down, or cut clothes hangers and bend into a staple shape. Do not allow the wires of the heat cable to cross, and make sure the outlet you use to plug it in has a ground fault circuit breaker installed in it. Cover this with about one inch of dirt, and then cover this with some fiberglass window screen. This is to prevent you from cutting the electric cable if you start digging in the hot bed with a trowel. Then cover the screen with about two inches of topsoil or potting soil. Again, you may plant directly in this, or in bedding packs.

The hot bed can be turned into a propagation chamber to root cuttings in midsummer.

A hot bed can be constructed the old fashioned way with fresh manure and organic matter, or with electric heating cables. Either way, it is an ideal structure to use to start seedlings in the spring and root cuttings in midsummer.

What Is a Greenhouse?

Also called a glass house or hothouse, a greenhouse is a structure for growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. The glass sides and top of the structure allow the warming radiation from the sun to enter. This special glass traps the heat within the greenhouse and keeps it warm enough for the plants to thrive, even when the weather is colder outside, well past the normal growing season.

The first greenhouse dates back to Roman times, when they first erected structures to protect their plants. Though primitive, the heated pits and slabs of rocks worked to a degree. The Romans' understanding of the effects of heat and light, though, was in error. They believed heat was more important than light and so built structures that maintained the heat, but blocked out most of the light.

By the mid 1800's, though people were starting to figure out that light was beneficial to the plants so the greenhouse designs began to evolve. One important development, besides the use of glass, was making a curved roof instead of a flat one. This allowed more of the sun's rays to enter the structure.

About this time a noted horticulturist named Joseph Paxton came on the scene and improved the greenhouse designs. He's most famous for the large Palmhouse at Kew Gardens and the Crystal Palace.

Greenhouses haven't changed much in the past few decades and have become common sights in home gardens. One reason is that they allow people to extend the growing season, usually several weeks additional. If there's other heating involved, the greenhouse can be used for longer periods.

Unlike an open garden, a greenhouse allows the gardener or horticulturist to control the main factors that affect plant growth-- light, moisture and temperature. By being able to adjust all three to differing degrees, one can insure the particular plants have the perfect environment for growing.
